Hey there.
Right off the bat, I want to say that I know how you’re feeling. I know how you’re feeling because I’m in the exact same boat as you. A boat with no captain, left to the mercy of the winds in a seemingly unending ocean. You want to get to the security and safety of land, but without a map in hand, it just seems so hard right now. How weird is it that you have everything you need to get to a destination, except the destination itself?!
Maybe you’ve just graduated, but have no idea where to go from here. Maybe you’re working an unfulfilling or draining job, but can’t see a good way out of it. Or maybe, like me, you just don’t know what you want from life, and are struggling to live according to your own values instead of society’s.
Trust me, I’d like nothing more than the secret to finding my passion or discovering my purpose. Unfortunately, though, I just don’t have that right now. What I do have, however, is the knowledge that remaining a bystander in your own life will just prolong the disorienting confusion you’re feeling. Take action. Just a small step, in whichever direction seems best to you right now. Apply for an internship at that company that might interest you. Ask a friend or connection if they know a job that might suit you better than your current one. Pick up a new book that might give you clarity as to where your values and ways of life lie. All these small actions will compound, and while they may still not give you a map towards the promised land, they’ll at least get you closer to controlling your own boat. And sure, when you look back, you may realize that you could have made some better decisions here and there. But isn’t that still better than having no clue how you ended up where you are?
I want to encourage you to be unafraid of taking control of your own life. Make lots of mistakes, learn lots of new things, and continue to grow and develop. Counter the painful stagnation of feeling lost with your own deliberate action steps. And who knows – maybe if you’re lucky, you’ll be struck with an epiphany one day and discover your ultimate purpose here!
I wish you all the very best, and am so excited for you.
